As you can see by the majestic nature of this double page spread, Jack Kirby had a real affinity for the subject matter. This story was very meaningful and very symbolic to Kirby. Jack fought for this country in World War II and he modeled Henry Jones, the main character on the splash, after Jesse Owens, the multiple US Gold Medal winner in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Jones was a symbol of freedom for Jack, as Henry Jones is in this story. I don’t have to tell you how rare this exceptional double spread by Jack Kirby is.
